Many characteristics developed during this stage are positive, and lead the adolescent or young adult to develop a healthy  sense of self. However, there are some traits found in this age group, which may point to a susceptibility to substance use disorders. 

Experts at the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, describe three distinct characteristics that are commonly found in adolescents and young adults, who are struggling with substance abuse.

  • Impulsive risk taking
  • Lack of empathy
  • Avoidance of dealing with stressful situations

If your child is exhibiting troubling behaviors relating to any of the above behaviors, be proactive and seek out help.
